Speech and language therapy

Speech and language therapy provides evidence based services that anticipate and respond to the needs of individuals who experience speech, language, communication or swallowing difficulties.

The service works in partnership with these individuals, their families and other professions and agencies to reduce the impact of these often isolating difficulties, which effect people's wellbeing and their ability to participate in daily life.

Contact us: For general information and advice please contact the speech and language therapy office based at St John's hospital, tel: 01506 524 191

Areas covered by the service

Adults: Acute - Inpatients Outpatient clinic at St John's Hospital Nursing homes,  Templar day hospital,  St Michael's hospital,  Tippethill hospital

Paediatrics: Health centres, Schools and nurseries.  Also, a limited domiciliary (at home) service for both adults and paediatrics

Referrals

The service works with an open referral system. Referrals can be made by medical, nursing staff, allied health professionals, education personel, patient or carer.

When an adult is referred, the referral is logged onto a central referral system, and is acknowledged. The patient is then put on a waiting list, and an appointment will be offered in due course.

If a child is referred, the majority of child referrals are offered an appointment within four to six weeks for an initial assessment

Find us

We are based within St John's Hospital in Howden in Livingston. We offer a paediatric service from local health centres and clinics. There is also a limited domiciliary service.
