Free health checks in shopping centres

Customers in shopping centres across West Lothian are now able to access a free health check as part of a new initiative being set up by West Lothian CHCP. The pilot, Body Checkout is aimed at helping individuals to improve their health, identifying any potential problems at an early stage.

Customers doing their shopping will be able to use the mobile health service which offers a variety of free checks including blood pressure, cholesterol and body mass measurements.

Body Checkout is currently being offered in the Mill Centre, Blackburn in West Lothian and will shortly be rolled out in Almondvale Shopping Centre, Livingston. Plans are also in place to offer the service in other venues including a supermarket and community pharmacy in the near future.

Helen Yewdall, Public Health Practitioner, West Lothian CHCP said “This is a great opportunity for people who don’t regularly visit their GP to have a free check up in their everyday environment. It is also a real opportunity for NHS Lothian to promote a healthy lifestyle.

“There will be a small dedicated team consisting of a physician assistant, a nurse and an administrative assistant carrying out the health checks. They will be able to pass the results of the checks onto GPs for follow-up care, providing the patients give their consent. The team will also be able to offer patients advice and information on health services and the wide range of health improvement initiatives available across West Lothian.

David Kelly, Director of West Lothian CHCP, said “ The health service has an important part to play in ensuring that the way we provide healthcare makes it easy for people to access assessment and treatment. Body checkout is a good example of this as it offers individuals the chance for an opportunistic health check. I look forward to monitoring the success of the pilot across venues in West Lothian in the forthcoming months.”

Body Checkout is part of a two-year pilot set up by NHS Lothian called Access to Health. The innovative scheme is aimed at residents in some of the most deprived areas of West Lothian, offering comprehensive health checks in five local communities.
